The Swawou Layout Community Primary School for Girls is not just about getting girls back in to the classroom.  Based on the child friendly school model, the school seeks to deliver a quality education in a healthy and safe learning environment where the rights of its pupils are respected Key features of the school and how it will help the pupils are detailed below:

1) Inclusiveness - the school actively seeks out and recruits the most vulnerable out of school girls who would otherwise be unable to gain an education.  Our school boasts an almost 100% attendance and completion rate thanks to attendance monitoring systems, close working relationships with families and the community and no tuition or development fees.

2) An effective learning environment - we seek to ensure that every girl has the opportunity to develop
emotionally and physically, as well as intellectually.  The school offers a spacious learning environment with adequate furnishings and learning materials, allowing pupils to learn in a comfortable environment.  Adopting participatory learning methods, the school also enables children to explore and develop independent critical thinking skills and creativity.  With a teacher pupil ratio of just 15:1 the school ensures that each child is nurtured individually and has extra support where needed

3) Healthy and protective - t
he schools offers a healthy learning environment to its pupils with a hand washing corner, hygienic and private toilet facilities and a number of health promotion activities.  It also pays focus to the physical development of each pupil and provides a free nutritious meal each day, access to safe drinking water and a number of other activities aimed at promoting their physical development.  The school has a zero tolerance policy to abuse of any kind, including corporal punishment, making the school a safe haven for the pupils

4) Gender Responsive - t
he school seeks to promote gender equality and operates a positive discrimination policy of recruiting only vulnerable girls who are most likely to be subjected to gender based rights violations.  The school promotes respect for girl child education through a number of community awareness raising programmes and through a range of activities within the school to boost the confidence and morale of girls.  The school has already lessened the pupils demands at home, with them spending less time working and more time learning and playing

5)
Close links with families and the community - t
he school works closely with each family to understand each child's unique home situation to ensure that they are getting enough support in their learning.  It also works closely with the community to ensure there is local support and ownership of the project.
